If a Synthetic Tree Falls in the Forest...

Lone treeAccording to a CNN report, scientist in the US are busy creating a “synthetic tree” which is capable of removing CO2 from the atmosphere 1000 times faster than a real tree.

Although the contraption doesn’t look anything like a real tree (it looks more like a convenience store with a giant wheel made up of venetian blinds on top), it is capable of removing a ton of CO2 per day… about the amount 20 cars produce in 1 day.

The “synthetic tree” literally grabs CO2 out of the air and can do it anytime, anywhere. The device works when the wind blows through the venetian blind thingies (not the technical term). The CO2 that enters is trapped in a chamber, compressed and stored as liquid carbon dioxide. But therein lies one of the problems. What do you do with the liquid CO2? The current answer is “bury it, or store it away somewhere”… hmm. I guess it’s better stored away somewhere than floating free in the atmosphere creating mayhem! Read more >>

Southern Vamps Go Green

True Blood RecyclesI’m a little late catching up on the season premiere of True Blood, but how fun was it seeing southern gentleman Bill teach his new protégé Jessica to recycle her bottles of TruBlood.  If you think about it, vampires have always been about recycling – their food comes wrapped in a convenient package that can be used over and over again if not completely drained.  Blood is definitely a renewable resource.  And since vampires are immortal, it makes sense they would be worried about the state of the planet hundreds of years from now.  This southern belle wonders if savage bloodsucking creatures can do their part to save the earth, what’s stopping the rest of us?

Thinking Outside the Box

PizzaSo this is about the coolest “green” invention I have seen in a while. Ok, maybe not THE coolest, but you’ve got to admit a multi-purpose pizza box is a pretty wild idea!

The best part is how simple the idea is. They're taking something that already exists (and will probably always exist), and They're making it better. Sure you may never use some of the “features” of the box, but they are there just in case you need them. And if you don’t need them, then the box is perfectly happy to serve just as a pizza box. No fancy bells and whistles, just clean and simple, "green" design.

Anyone who doesn’t realize the genius of this “Green Box” is just plain crazy, or maybe just extremely jealous they didn’t think of it first! Bon appétit… Read more >>

Organic food makes dogs happy... shelter dogs too!

BaileyEvery dog deserves a full belly, and thanks to Castor and Pollux Pet Works, the founding sponsor of FreeKibble.com, more and more dogs (and cats) are getting free meals at animal shelters. To date they’ve given more than 55 tons of pet food and financial support.

At Freekibble.com (an idea dreamed up by a 12 year old girl named Mimi) visitors are asked to answer a trivia question each day. If you get the answer right, 10 pieces of kibble are donated to an animal shelter… but get this--even if you get the answer wrong, they STILL donate the 10 pieces of kibble. Thanks to this site, more than 1.2 million nutritious meals have been given to hungry dogs and cats! Read more >>

Gone With the Wind?

Wind TurbinesAs talk about wind energy is becoming more and more mainstream, some scientists believe the very thing that makes this energy source possible is actually beginning to slow down across the US. And the ironic part is that the slowing down is being caused by (you guessed it) global warming.

Have things really gotten so bad that our winds are dying along with the honeybees and the polar bears? Many say yes. To understand what is going on, you need to first understand what causes wind… and no the answer is not beans!

As we all know, hot air rises and cold air sinks. When the denser, cold air rushes in to replace the less dense, warm air--you get wind. Sure there are many other factors that influence wind including air pressure, lake and ocean effects, even the rotation of the earth, but the hot air/cold air thing is the variable that’s causing the winds to die down.
