Primo water bottles are #1

Primo Water BottleWater bottles have long been a menace to society, and sadly the environment has paid a heavy price for convenience, but if the Primo Water Company has their way, then nasty petroleum based water bottles will be a thing of the past.

Primo is the first nationally available bottled water whose bottle is made from plants, not crude oil. Using the revolutionary Ingeo Plastic from NatureWorks (the same material SunChips is using to make their compostable chip bags), Primo Water has formed a partnership to make their bottles from this 100% annually renewable, plant-based plastic. Did Obama kill the hydrogen car?

Hydrogen FuelIf President Obama gets his way, the 2010 federal budget will include a 60% cut in funding for hydrogen-car research (which equates to a cut of about $100 million). This cut is a direct result of the President throwing his support behind the electric plug-in vehicle. This move was apparently done because the infrastructure to support electric vehicles already exists in every home in America.

Experts estimate it will cost about $200 billion to develop the necessary nationwide infrastructure to support hydrogen powered cars, and that investment will only be able to support about 2 million vehicles (there are approximately 300 million vehicles on the road today). So the question becomes: is the investment worth it? Read more >>

Here comes the sun… chips

Wheat field at dawnSunChips are really stepping up when it comes to going green. First there was the solar powered plant in Modesto, CA, then their sponsorship of the rebuilding of Greenburg, KS (a town destroyed by a tornado and rebuilt to be the first “green” town), and now they are planning to make their bags 100% compostable come 2010. And this is all on top of having some mighty fine tasting chips!

Currently every 10.5oz SunChip bag is made from 33% renewable, plant based materials, but the really exciting part happens in 2010 when they plan to introduce the first fully compostable bag of its kind (what do you bet they debut the bag on Earth Day!).

The bag (created in partnership with NatureWorks, LLC) will use the plant based plastic known as Ingeo. This is the world’s first and only plastic made from 100% annually renewable resource. The current source is corn. These bags are designed to fully decompose in about 14 weeks when placed in a hot, active compost pile. Read more >>

No Kidding!

Smiling GoatDid ya hear about the Google goats?  Google has fields at their Mountain View headquarters that need to be cleared of brush about once a year.  Usually they do it the old-fashioned way with a crew of people on large noisy lawn mowers.  This year, as part of their green efforts, Google decided to do it the old old-fashioned way and use goats.

They hired a herder from California Grazing to bring in 200 goats for about a week.  The goats managed to “mow” the four-foot tall brush in just a few days.  They were kept in line by their middle management supervisor, Jen, the border collie.  Read more >>
